Why didn’t Voyager wait for the Malon to leave?
In the Voyager episode "Night" (ssn 5 ep 1) Voyager is caught in "the void" (an area of space with no stars or spatial anomalies) when they meet an indigenous species, and also a Malon freighter dumping toxic theta radiation.
Fast forward, and they have to fight their way passed the Malon freighter to get to a worm hole to escape the expanse. But since the freighter has already said they were going to leave "in two hours", why didn't Voyager just play nice until they left, then they wouldn't have to fight their way to the vortex, and could still destroy it to save the indigenous humanoids? Did the Malon some how control the opening to the vortex? If so, why wasn't this mentioned?
