Hoshi mentions having a pen pal and it being like a little window into a strange new place with strange names – couldn’t she just hop on a shuttle?

"HOSHI: I had a pen pal once when I was twelve, from Brisbane, Australia, and I loved getting her letters. It was like this little window into distant places with strange sounding names."

I mean, shuttle travel in the 2100's is surely just as routine and non-needing to plan as us hopping on a city bus (or between states) – why was having a pen pal such a big deal? Even these days people routinely meet their "pen pals" from halfway around the world.
